To Town and Back
Brilliant blue hues peek through
a red hazy,banded sunrise.
The desolate parched saltbush
battling on in stark contrast.
Out here nothing matches
this moment in time.
Each day dawning with
a promise of renewed life.
Day draws on and dust
and heat pervade the air.
Tis a bloody wonder how
anything survives out here.
Carcasses lay contorted,near
the unforgiving highway.
Basking for the last time
before the scavengers consume.
The city,an oasis in comparison,
sighted beside a calm,balmy ocean.
Offers short respite,
'til our task is completed.
Returning now in the heat of day,
we watch the scenic changes.
From the opposite angle,
the fierce sun, on my side, once more.
A lizard squats,watching,listening
as our droning vehicle passes
I imagine its thoughts on life
being similar to mine.
Stinking hot,the hours drag by
and then welcome relief
An ominous cloud bank rolls in,
to conceal our scorching sun.
And above the thunderheads,
five lines of surf-like cloud,
flood brilliantly with light.
Prisms of colour exploding outward.
Reprieve, the sun starts to set,
dipping below oceans horizon.
Awakening the world,
on opposite shores.
One more hour and
we'll be home once again.
It's time for a tinny,
Nigel, my friend.
